Arsenal & Chelsea send back 6000 unsold Europa Final tickets

Arsenal and Chelsea are sending as many as 6,000 unsold tickets for the Europa League final back to UEFA.

The governing body is facing the possibility of large areas of empty seats at the Olympic Stadium in Baku, as fans from both London clubs opt not to make the 5000-mile round trip to Azerbaijan's capital city next week.

The Gunners expect to have around 4,000 supporters in the stadium, having sold more than 3,000 tickets and a further 500 or so anticipated from supporters clubs from across the world, including Asia and the United States.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have sold around 2,000 of their 6,000 allocation and have sent the remainder back to UEFA.

How do imagine such a shithole as Baku which is very very difficult to get to got the final?
As usual brown envelopes win out over doing the right thing by fans.
Can you imagine any corporates wanting to go to it either?
Unless they give away tickets it will be half full at best

This is the most dismal football season I can recall in my lifetime.

2 non champions in the Champions League final.

Europa League, which is shit and just fucks up domestic football, not even occurring in Europe. (Well, barely)

May as well host the FA Cup final in Iceland. (Not the shop)

Huge backhanders have gone on here.It was pretty much a banker that the finalists would be from a western european country ie,England,France,Italy,Spain or Germany so the venue for the final makes no sense other than huge ‘incentives’ were dished out.Same probably applies to them getting the formula one as well.

A mate is undecided on whether to go - the problem is travel. There aren't many unofficial ways to get there (and very few left now) and the official trips are £1000.

I'm sure we'd take more but numbers are limited because people just can't get there.

Baku is actually lovely.

UEFA and F1 get bundles of money by raising interest in these sports in the Middle East by holding events there and the TV rights and advertising in that region make the money

There should also be a provisional venue in the case of two teams from the same nation reaching the final.

It won't happen but in this case Paris would have been perfect and accomodation wouldn't have been a problem just a return trip on the Eurostar in most cases.

Who in their right mind would travel all that way for a fixture they can see at least twice a year in London?

It's an astonishing achievement for English football to block out both European finals but the organisers must have been gutted!

Part of the allocation of finals should be some sort of demonstration that the place can handle 60,000 fans arriving and has the flights and hotels available at some sort of semi reasonable price from most parts of Europe.
It’s pretty basic stuff
Which appears beyond the suits in their private jets and free hotel rooms.

That said these teams can now be TAUNTED about how lukewarm their fair weather support is.

They have both won the FA Cup 7 times since the mid 90’s and been in previous European finals in the last couple of decades.
Like most of these teams they have been SATED and are bloated by constant success

If we were in a European final we’d probably take 50,000 to Syria, the Galápagos Islands or THE MOON.
